ARTADI GRANDES AÑADAS 2001 | RIOJA | EL GRAN VINO DE ARTADI | 98RP

"The prodigious, inky/purple-colored 2001 Grandes Anadas marries elegance with tremendous power and flavor intensity. It represents Spain's version of Comte de Vogue's Musigny... in a top vintage. Aromas of spice box, violets, raspberries, blackberries, plums, cherries, and an undeniable minerality are found in this structured, ripe, phenomenally intense red. The finish exceeds one minute, yet it gives the impression that it is not close to being mature. While it offers plenty of enjoyment now, ideally it should be given 3-4 years of cellaring and consumed over the following two decades."

"I tasted a barrel sample of the 2001 Grandes Anadas, which is only declared in top vintages. A candidate for perfection, it is an inky/purple-colored wine with fabulous purity, texture, clarity, and palate presence. It looks to be a legend in the making."

"Medium ruby. Penetrating aromas of blueberry, cassis and bitter chocolate. At once fat and firm, with strong acids giving shape and verve to the flavors of roasted blackberry, violet, espresso, nuts and baking spices. This has real power and thrust, not to mention inner-mouth perfume. Finishes with big but sweet tannins and terrific length. Like the Pagos Viejos, this is 100% Tempranillo. This special bottling was previously offered only in 1994, 1998 and 1999."

As its name suggests, this wine is produced in the best years only. The Artadi Grandes Añades has been made three times before in the 94, 98 and 99 vintages. The 2001 vintage was the last and best vintage made! A special selection of the Pagos Viejos vineyards, it is made from 100% Tempranillo that has been aged in new French oak for almost 40 months. The dense and focused Grandes Añadas is a highly structured red, packed with fruit and full of flavor. It is the more muscular and masculine component to the supple El Pison. Hold this wine easily through the next 20-30 years. Limited production to approx. 10.000 bottles. Classy wine! Mythical stuff!
