"This is incredible on the nose with fresh flowers, spices, pure dark fruit and hints of stones. Full-bodied and so refined and polished with such intensity and length. Just goes on and on... forever. A magical wine. From organically grown grapes. Please leave it for five or six years, if you can."

"It's always a very exciting moment when tasting a new vintage of what has quickly become one of the icons from Rioja. The 2018 Las Beatas comes from a very wet year that saw a late harvest, starting October 8 and finishing on November 1, and these grapes were picked in mid-October to deliver a more aromatic and cool expression of the place. The field blend of grapes fermented in a 3,000-liter open-top oak vat with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured in a 1,200-liter oak foudre for 14 to 16 months. This is not as powerful and concentrated as the 2015, but it's more elegant and fluid, with great purity and inner strength. The grapes ripened very slowly, and the wine developed great complexity and nuance. It feels young and undeveloped, a little closed at first, in need of some more time to develop further complexity in bottle. It's tender and young, easy to drink, approachable and round, but with all the ingredients to develop nicely in bottle.1,528 bottles were filled in May 2020."

"Las Beatas is something of a mystery, even to Pablo Eguzkiza, the man who makes it. He thinks the 1.9-hectare vineyard contains nine varieties, with Tempranillo accounting for 50% of the blend, but he's not sure. 'It could be eight. No one knows.' The result leaves the taster in no doubt, however, as this is a sublime wine that's as close to the delicacy of a Musigny Grand Cru as you get in Rioja. Pure, transparent and refined, with velvety tannins, floral summer pudding fruit, fine acidity and top notes of wild herbs and aromatic spices. Stunning. 2023-38."

Las Beatas 2018

1.9 hectares in the northwesternmost area of Rioja Alavesa, where the continental Miocene conglomerates are mixed with sandstone and marl outcrops from the late Tertiary.

Ten levels of terraces facing east, south and northwest. Old vineyard combined with young vineyard. Eight, maybe nine? local varieties. Las Beatas is an exceptional "site", capable of providing water to the vines regularly, like only “grand crus” do.

Las Beatas has been aged exclusively in a 1,200 l foudre in our very old and cold cellar.

2018 was a very wet and late year in which we had to fight hard to control powdery mildew. The precipitations did not impede a good flowering and, with precise viticulture, we achieved generally healthy, abundant and high quality grapes. In Las Beatas, due to its multi-varietal character, we had to wait a little longer for the grapes to ripen. Harvest took place in mid-October. Las Beatas 2018 once again offers the magic of the place, perhaps even more aromatic and more refined in style. 1,528 bottles produced.
