PRADO ENEA GRAN RESERVA 2004 | BODEGAS MUGA | RIOJA | 96RP

"I revisited the 2004 Prado Enea Gran Reserva, as they hold small quantities of older vintages that are sold mostly to restaurants. I was really surprised by the slow development of this vintage in bottle, which is still young and with an incredible aging potential. The aromas are only starting to develop some tertiary characteristics while still showing a fruit side, and the spices are slowly increasing but the pace is really slow. The palate has concentration and depth, clean and focused flavors and great length, with outstanding overall balance and harmony. I think this is a more classical vintage than the 2005 I ended up tasting next to it, which can be a little more modern. At that time, they were producing some 150,000 bottles of Prado Enea. Drink: 2018-2035."

"The 2004 Prado Enea Gran Reserva is not quite as dense as the 2005 but is more expressive on the nose and rounder on the palate. It is a complete effort that should prove to be one of the best Prado Eneas Muga has produced."

"Dark ruby. An intensely perfumed nose displays cherry-cola, cassis, licorice and woodsmoke, with a sexy floral quality and very good focus. Juicy, penetrating dark fruit flavors are given spine by tangy acidity and pick up bitter chocolate and spicecake nuances with air. Supple tannins add shape to the very long, sappy, smoke-accented finish. This is still a baby."

"Exemplary Gran Reserva Rioja blending modernity with the best traditions of this famed region. Perfumed, lush and complex to start, then vibrant in the mouth, with excellent integration of fl avors, acidity and tannins. Tastes of fi ne tobacco, mulled blackberry, chocolate and dry spices. Proper as the textbook calls for but individual as well."

This is an excellent vintage of one of the truly great, collectible, must-have Riojas. If you are getting into cellaring Riojas (which, of course, we hope you are as the wines age beautifully!) then this is a terrific cellar candidate. "Prado Enea" is the flagship, the most steadfastly traditional wine from the Bodegas Muga stable. While it has the combination of spice and savor, high toned fruit and challk, heady floral aromatics and sumptuous berry fruit that the best Riojas show, it manages to offer both the finer fragrance and greater intensity of flavor on the palate that only the best vintages bring to the table. This is a terrific wine to put down in the cellar and share with friends in another several years - or much longer, if you prefer. What can we say - this is awesome Rioja, a classic.
