Founded in 2002, Bodegas El Nido is a project of the Gil family of Jumilla and the renowned Australian Chris Ringland, who serves as head winemaker. It is a 100-acre estate in the Valle de La Aragona, in the Jumilla region of Spain. Two wines are produced: the "Clio" and the flagship wine "El Nido". The "El Nido" is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% old vine Monastrell aged approximately two years in (new) French and American barrels. About 5,000 bottles of El Nido are produced annually. This wine tastes like chocolate-covered cherries, with an underpinning of saddle leather, spice and smoke. Rich, powerful and extracted. It has a lot of everything in an XL-way, but nothing over the limit; all is perfectly balanced. With a sterling track record of mid-90s scores from Wine Advocate, it's only a matter of time that the 2017 iteration of this wine will once hit heavy with the critical press, but with a winemaker like Chris Ringland at the helm (no stranger himself to 100-points accolades), this extraordinary pick becomes a safe bet and surely the ultimate thing.
